Chris Paul Inspires Morehouse Grads with Leadership and Legacy Lessons

NBA star Chris Paul delivered the commencement address at Morehouse College’s 142nd graduation ceremony in Atlanta. The event honoured the basketball legend with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree as he shared lessons on leadership and accountability with the graduates. Paul began his speech by reflecting on his time leading the NBA Players Association. He stressed the value of collective goals over individual success and urged graduates to prioritise teamwork in their own careers.

The 12-time All-Star also spoke openly about personal setbacks. He recounted oversleeping early in his career and losing his starting position, a moment that taught him the importance of self-discipline. This lesson became a cornerstone of his message to the class of 2024. Addressing broader challenges, Paul highlighted the obstacles Black men often face in professional environments. He encouraged graduates to respond by building ‘bigger tables, not walls,’ fostering inclusion rather than division. His call to embrace leadership rooted in service earned multiple standing ovations from the crowd. Paul, who attended Wake Forest University before graduating from Winston-Salem State University—an HBCU—also redefined legacy. He told graduates it should be measured by the people they inspire, not the awards they collect.

The ceremony marked Paul’s latest recognition beyond the basketball court. His speech left graduates with a clear challenge: to lead with discipline, accountability, and a commitment to lifting others. The honorary degree now joins his long list of achievements, both on and off the court.
