Bruno Fernandes ties Premier League assist record in historic season
Bruno Fernandes has matched a historic Premier League record with his 20th assist of the season. The Manchester United midfielder reached the milestone during the 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest. His performance this campaign has also earned him the FWA Footballer of the Year award. Fernandes now shares the single-season assist record with Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. His 20th assist came in the victory against Forest, where he also scored a penalty. Across 34 league appearances this term, he has contributed 8 goals and 20 assists.
The Portuguese playmaker has one last chance to break the record outright. Manchester United’s final match takes place away to Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Sunday. The club has already secured third place and Champions League football for next season. Despite his impressive form, former United captain Roy Keane criticised Fernandes for prioritising the assist record. Meanwhile, the midfielder’s current deal is set to enter its final year this summer. The club, however, holds an option to extend his contract by an additional 12 months.
Fernandes will aim to surpass Henry and De Bruyne’s tally in the season’s closing fixture. His contributions have been vital in United’s return to the Champions League. The outcome of his contract situation remains to be seen in the coming months.
