Box office thrives as Michael breaks records and new films debut strong
The box office saw strong performances from both new releases and established films over the weekend. Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic, continued its record-breaking run, while fresh titles like Obsession and Is God Is made notable debuts. Michael dominated once again, earning $26 million in its fourth weekend in North America. The film has now grossed $283 million domestically and $703.8 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing musical biopic in North America—surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody’s $216 million.
New releases also performed well. Obsession, a horror film, opened with $16 million and received an 'A-' CinemaScore alongside a 94% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Is God Is, directed by Aleshea Harris, debuted with $2.2 million, earning a 'B+' CinemaScore and a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score.
Meanwhile, The Devil Wears Prada 2 remained strong in its third weekend, adding $18 million to its global total of $546.2 million. Mortal Kombat followed with $13.4 million in its second weekend, bringing its North American earnings to $62.2 million. Sheep Detective also continued its run, taking in $9.3 million and reaching $29.6 million domestically.
Other films saw more modest results. In the Grey, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, opened with $3 million, receiving a 'B' CinemaScore and a 46% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Billie Eilish - Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D) earned $800,000 in its second weekend, pushing its domestic total to $9.2 million. The weekend’s results highlight Michael’s continued box office dominance, while Obsession and Is God Is proved strong contenders among new releases. With multiple films sustaining steady earnings, the market remains active across different genres.
