Berlin's May Festivals Blend Asian Music, Jazz Tributes and Street Parades
Berlin is set to host a vibrant mix of cultural events over the coming days. From traditional Asian melodies to free-reed instrument showcases and a lively street parade, the city will celebrate music and diversity in late May. Festivals will take place across iconic venues, including the Konzerthaus, Kulturbrauerei, and the streets of Kreuzberg. The Berlin Asian Music Festival runs from May 25 to 28 at the Konzerthaus on Gendarmenmarkt. Musicians from Korea, China, Japan, and Mongolia will perform, blending traditional sounds with Western chamber music. The event highlights cross-cultural collaboration through live performances.
On May 23, the Galiläa Church will honour jazz legend Sun Ra with a film portrait and tribute concert. The evening pays respect to the avant-garde composer’s enduring influence on experimental music. The Carnival of Cultures, held every Pentecost, returns with its parade now moving along Karl-Marx-Allee. The procession begins at 1:30 PM on May 24, followed by a street festival around Blücherplatz in Kreuzberg. The event showcases music, dance, and food from Berlin’s diverse communities. From May 29 to 31, the Harmonica Fen Festival takes over Kulturbrauerei. The programme features free-reed instruments like the harmonica, jaw harp, accordion, and Chinese sheng. Workshops and concerts will explore the unique sounds of these often-overlooked instruments. This year also marks 30 years since the death of singer Rio Reiser, a key figure in German protest music.
The festivals bring together artists, musicians, and audiences from different backgrounds. Events like the Asian Music Festival, Harmonica Fen, and Carnival of Cultures will fill Berlin with performances, parades, and tributes. Each celebration offers a chance to experience the city’s rich cultural scene in late spring.
