Astros reshuffle roster as injuries mount and pitchers struggle
The Houston Astros have made several roster changes as injuries continue to affect the team. Pitcher Bennett Sousa has been sidelined again, while Jayden Murray returns from Triple-A to fill the gap. The club has also added outfielder Rhylan Thomas from waivers but sent him to their minor-league affiliate.
Bennett Sousa was placed on the 15-day injured list due to left elbow inflammation. His latest injury follows an earlier stint on the list this season because of an oblique issue. Sousa’s move is retroactive to Wednesday, and he last appeared in Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
With Sousa out, the Astros recalled 29-year-old Jayden Murray from Triple-A Sugar Land. Murray previously pitched six innings for Houston this season, posting a 6.00 ERA. His return adds depth to a bullpen stretched thin by injuries. The team also claimed outfielder Rhylan Thomas off waivers from the Seattle Mariners. However, he was immediately optioned to Sugar Land, meaning he will start in the minors. Meanwhile, pitcher Hunter Brown was shifted to the 60-day injured list, extending his absence. Houston now has 15 players on the injured list, including nine pitchers. The high number of injuries has forced the team to make frequent adjustments to its roster in recent weeks.
The Astros’ latest moves aim to address ongoing injury concerns, particularly in the pitching staff. Murray’s recall provides immediate relief, while Thomas joins the organisation but begins in the minors. The team continues to manage a lengthy list of sidelined players as the season progresses.
