Astafyev Port's giant coal canopy nears finish to curb dust pollution
A massive canopy over the coal unloading area at Astafyev Port is nearing completion. The structure, designed to handle Primorsky Krai’s harsh climate, will cover over 10,000 square metres when finished. It marks a key step toward fully enclosed coal transshipment at the terminal. Construction of the canopy began with 12 reinforced concrete foundations, each standing 12 metres tall. Sixteen additional supports were built to hold up the steel-aluminium framework, made up of tens of thousands of components. Once complete, the canopy will reach 33 metres in height and stretch 206 metres in length.
A protective curtain has been installed around the unloading zone to block coal dust from spreading. The terminal already uses 12 advanced dust suppression systems, including smart water cannons and a vacuum machine, which operate in all weather conditions.
The project involves international firms such as Spain’s Gaptec, alongside local companies T-Stroy and Alpar Plus. Work is expected to finish in the third quarter of 2026. Once operational, the canopy will allow Astafyev Terminal to switch entirely to enclosed coal handling. The new system, combined with existing dust control measures, aims to reduce environmental impact during transshipment. Completion is set for late 2026.
