Andy Green targets three land speed records with hydrogen-powered JCB Hydromax
British driver Andy Green is set to attempt three world land speed records in August 2023. He will pilot the hydrogen-powered JCB Hydromax across the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. The FIA has confirmed it will oversee the record attempts at the historic location. Green already holds two major land speed titles. In 1997, he became the first person to break the sound barrier on land, reaching 763 mph in the ThrustSSC. Nine years later, he set the Diesel Land Speed record at 328 mph, driving the JCB Dieselmax.
The new JCB Hydromax measures 32 feet long and delivers more power than its predecessor. Testing has shown reliable performance, with expectations that it will surpass the Dieselmax’s achievements. Green’s targets include the Hydrogen ICE record (185 mph), the Hydrogen record (302 mph), and a new JCB Hydromax benchmark of 350 mph.
If he exceeds 350 mph, he will break all three records in a single run. The following day, he plans to push the vehicle even further, aiming to surpass his own Diesel Land Speed record. The attempt will take place under FIA supervision in Bonneville, a site famous for high-speed records. Success would see Green add three new titles to his name. The hydrogen-powered vehicle could also set a new standard for sustainable land speed racing.
