Yakutia faces steep utility hikes in 2026 amid rising debt and costs

Residents of Yakutia are bracing for another steep rise in utility costs next year. The government has approved a two-stage tariff increase in 2026, adding to the 13% hike already seen in 2025. Officials cite mounting debt and rising expenses as the main reasons behind the decision. The price surge will roll out in two phases: a 1.7% jump on 1 January, followed by a sharper 15% rise on 1 October. These increases come on top of a 2025 hike and will extend into 2027, outpacing general inflation. The region’s debt to resource suppliers has swelled to nearly 28 billion rubles, pushing authorities to act.

Nikolai Bochkov, head of Yakutia’s State Price Committee, is leading the changes. His plan includes raising tariffs, phasing out subsidies, and introducing 'social norms' for heat and water use. The moves aim to stabilise finances after years of underinvestment in infrastructure. Other factors are also driving costs upward. A 22% VAT increase and soaring fuel prices have added pressure, leaving households struggling. Journalist Margarita Nifontova has warned that many residents may soon find it impossible to keep up with payments.

The tariff adjustments will stretch over three years, with further rises expected in 2027. Authorities argue the measures are necessary to address long-term financial shortfalls and infrastructure gaps. For now, residents must prepare for higher bills as the changes take effect.
