Whit Stillman returns with A Night at Claridge's after a decade away
Whit Stillman is returning to filmmaking after a decade with A Night at Claridge’s, an adaptation of Patrick Hamilton’s novel The Slaves of Solitude. Set in autumn 1943 against the backdrop of D-Day preparations in southern England, the project has already attracted a high-profile cast and production team. The film will be introduced to buyers at the upcoming Cannes Film Market by Altitude. The story centres on Miss Roach, a publisher’s reader forced from her London home by bombing raids. Laura Carmichael will take on the lead role, reuniting with director Stillman after their previous collaboration. Adam Brody has also joined the cast, alongside Tom Bennett and Susan Hampshire.
Production is being overseen by Georgina Lowe, Valencia Haynes, and Suzanne Warren under SOS Productions Ltd. French co-producer Lauranne Bourrachot of Le Spectre, Paris, will support the project. John Sloss, via Cinetic Media, will serve as executive producer while managing domestic rights. The film marks Stillman’s first directorial effort in ten years. Its wartime setting and literary roots have already generated industry interest ahead of its Cannes presentation.
With a completed cast and production team in place, A Night at Claridge’s is moving forward under Altitude’s sales banner. The film’s Cannes Market debut will determine its international distribution. Stillman’s return and the novel’s adaptation are expected to draw attention from buyers and audiences alike.
