Vietnam earns WHO recognition for tobacco control at global health summit
A Vietnamese delegation led by Permanent Deputy Minister Vũ Mạnh Hà attended the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA79) in Geneva from May 18 to 22. The event highlighted Vietnam’s growing role in global health initiatives, with the country receiving recognition for its tobacco control efforts. During the assembly, the World Health Organisation (WHO) awarded Vietnam a certificate for its achievements in reducing tobacco harm. The recognition, presented by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, acknowledged the country’s progress in policy development, legal reforms, public awareness campaigns, and enforcement of tobacco control measures.
Vũ Mạnh Hà and the delegation also held discussions with health leaders from Cuba, Malaysia, Laos, Japan, and representatives of NGOs and businesses. These meetings focused on potential collaborations in health security and disease prevention. At the assembly, Vietnam outlined three key priorities: strengthening primary healthcare, improving global health security, and tackling the health impacts of climate change. The country emphasised its commitment to adapting its health system to climate-related risks while seeking continued international support. The delegation further reaffirmed Vietnam’s dedication to sharing expertise, resources, and coordination with global partners. The aim is to build a more resilient and equitable health system capable of addressing challenges like emerging diseases, climate change, and non-communicable illnesses.
Vietnam’s participation in WHA79 underscored its active engagement in global health governance. The certificate from WHO marks a milestone in the nation’s tobacco control efforts, while its focus on climate resilience and international cooperation signals ongoing commitment to public health advancements.
