The days are growing longer, the air warmer, and life is returning to the Werra Cycle Path!

With great anticipation, we warmly invite you to the opening event of the 7th cycling season at the Cycle Path Church in Tiefenort—a celebration for the senses, for cyclists, and for anyone longing for community and reflection.

When: Sunday, May 3, 2026, at 5:00 PMWhere:St. Peter's Church, Tiefenort, right on the Werra Cycle Path

A Musical Kickoff to the Season

The festivities begin with a short, uplifting service inside St. Peter's Church, followed by a lively open-air concert on the church square. The Urnshäuser Musikanten, led by the experienced Mario Wiese, will provide the musical backdrop with spirited brass tunes to lift the soul and set the wheels in motion.

For those who want more than just music, there will be light refreshments and plenty of opportunities to chat, share stories, and enjoy the spring evening in good company.

A Beacon Along the Cycle Path Since 2019

The idea of offering cyclists not just a sip of water but a true moment of respite for the soul is nothing new. Back in 2019, the church council decided to establish St. Peter's as an "Open Church"—a place of welcome and quiet reflection.

What started as a passion project quickly became a beloved landmark along the 300-kilometer Werra Cycle Path, one of Germany's most popular river routes.

Today, we welcome around 1,700 visitors annually—people who pause to light a candle, say a prayer, or simply soak in the peace. Each visit is a quiet testament to how much such places of stillness are needed in our fast-paced world.

A Success Story with Deep Roots

The Cycle Path Church was officially inaugurated on July 4, 2021, with a festive service. But it is far more than just a tourist stop—it is the first and only church of its kind in the entire Wartburg district.

The project was inspired by Reverend Thomas Volkmann, who brought the concept from his previous parish in Allendorf-Schwarzburg. His guiding principle says it all: "This door is open to everyone—just like God's heart."

A Place to Recharge—Body and Soul

Cycle path churches are no longer a niche phenomenon but a growing network of spiritual waystations. Over 350 churches across Germany now bear the green sign, offering rest and reflection from Easter through autumn.

In Tiefenort, weary cyclists can enjoy a cool drink, relax in a peaceful setting, and find renewal before continuing their journey.

Your Rest Stop Along the Way

The Werra Cycle Path connects not just landscapes but people, stretching from the Rhön Mountains to Hann. Münden.

St. Peter's Church and its team invite you to be part of this success story—whether as a guest seeking a break or a cyclist in search of a quiet moment.

We look forward to seeing you again and wish you a safe and blessed ride! Stop by, take a pause, and let's start a new season of encounters together.
