Thái Nguyên bets big on tourism with 12 million visitor goal by 2030
Thái Nguyên Province is pushing tourism to the forefront of its economic plans. Officials have set ambitious targets, aiming for 12 million visitors by 2030. Early progress shows promise, with over 900,000 tourists arriving in the first three months of 2026 alone. The province is focusing on two major sites: Núi Cốc Lake and Ba Bể Lake. Núi Cốc, covering roughly 2,500 hectares, is being transformed into a multi-purpose tourism complex. Meanwhile, Ba Bể—a 500-hectare freshwater lake—stands out for its rugged scenery and deep cultural ties to local ethnic groups.
Thái Nguyên’s landscape offers more than just lakes. Limestone mountains form dramatic peaks, hidden valleys, and extensive cave systems. The area also boasts 69 natural and man-made lakes, perfect for eco-tourism and water-based activities. Beyond nature, the province preserves a rich heritage, with three special national relic sites and 67 national relics.
By 2030, tourism revenue is expected to surpass VNĐ25 trillion (US$494 million) annually. Authorities are betting on these natural and cultural strengths to turn tourism into a sustainable economic driver. The province’s strategy hinges on leveraging its diverse terrain and heritage. With Núi Cốc and Ba Bể as flagship destinations, officials are working to attract millions more visitors. If targets are met, tourism could reshape Thái Nguyên’s economy in the coming decade.
