Tallinn battles heavy snowfall with 800 tons of salt and round-the-clock crews

A weekend snowstorm tested Tallinn's readiness, but relentless crews and tons of salt kept the city moving. See how they cleared 3,500 cubic metres of snow in record time.

Tallinn battles heavy snowfall with 800 tons of salt and round-the-clock crews

Last weekend was the first serious test for the capital's utilities this year. The city reported on the scale of the fight against the elements: the equipment worked non-stop, but they could not physically manage everywhere.

The figures of the "snow battle" over the weekend:

  • People: 120 cleaners with shovels and 167 drivers of special equipment worked on the streets every day.
  • Chemistry: 868 tons of chlorides (salts) were poured onto the roads.
  • Granite: Granite chips were used 40 times less - only 20 tons (mainly at schools, hospitals and bus stops).
  • Removal: 3,495 cubic meters of snow have already been removed to landfills.

Vice Mayor Kristjan Jarvan thanked the workers for the night shifts, and asked the townspeople to "be understanding".:

"Technology cannot be everywhere at the same time. Our partners are doing their best."

Where can I complain?

If your sidewalk has turned into a skating rink or snowdrift, the city advises not to be silent.:

Editorial comment:

The ratio of the deposited materials (868 tons of salt versus 20 tons of crumbs) clearly shows that Tallinn still relies on the "chemical melting" of snow, rather than the Scandinavian method (rolling + crumbs). We all see the result on our shoes and pets' paws. However, I am glad that the snow began to be removed promptly, without waiting for the snowdrifts to block parking lots and intersections.
