Switzerland orders 116 new double-decker trains for 2031 rail upgrade

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has ordered 116 double-decker trains from Siemens Mobility, securing options for additional vehicles. The new trains are set to enter service on the S-Bahn network starting in 2031.

The order covers 116 six-car Desiro DoSto double-decker trains, with an option for up to 84 more. According to the company, the contract is valued at approximately two billion Swiss francs.

From 2031, the new trains will primarily serve Zurich's S-Bahn network and routes in western Switzerland. Built on Siemens' Desiro HC platform, they are designed for high capacity and efficiency in urban and commuter traffic, offering around 540 seats per train along with additional standing room.

Beyond increased capacity, Siemens highlights enhanced passenger comfort, barrier-free boarding, and modern real-time travel information systems. Sustainability is also a key focus: energy-efficient propulsion systems and the use of low-CO₂ materials aim to reduce both energy consumption and environmental impact.

Project execution will partially take place in Switzerland, including local testing and commissioning, while core components will be manufactured in Germany. The order further strengthens the long-standing partnership between SBB and Siemens Mobility.
