South Australia braces for heavy rain, winds and flooding risks this week
A major low-pressure system is set to hit South Australia, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, and thunderstorms from Monday. Adelaide and coastal regions face risks of flooding, damaging winds, and abnormally high tides that could disrupt businesses and events.
Adelaide is expected to see up to 15mm of rain on Monday, with totals rising to 25mm on Tuesday. Further showers will continue throughout the week. Meanwhile, Mount Gambier, Victor Harbor, and Kingscote may receive up to 25mm on Monday and 20mm on Tuesday. Some areas could see daily rainfall of 30mm or more, with thunderstorms pushing totals even higher in isolated spots.
Strong winds are forecast from Monday, reaching damaging or destructive levels. Residents have been advised to secure loose items, tidy yards, and tie down trampolines over the weekend. Authorities also recommend cleaning gutters again, even if done earlier this year, to prevent blockages. Abnormally high tides pose an additional threat, particularly along western coasts from Monday into Tuesday. Central and eastern coasts will face the greatest risk on Tuesday into Wednesday. Sandbagging may be needed in vulnerable areas, similar to measures taken during last year’s flooding.
The severe weather system brings multiple hazards, including heavy rain, strong winds, and dangerous tides. Residents and businesses are urged to prepare properties and monitor updates as conditions develop over the coming days.
