Sochi on high alert as avalanche risks and poor visibility strike

Authorities in Sochi have issued warnings as severe weather conditions hit the region. Both residents and visitors are being urged to take extra precautions amid high avalanche risks and poor visibility. Heavy cloud cover has settled over the area, reducing visibility to between 500 and 1,000 metres. The worst-affected zones include high ground, mountain passes, and foothills.

Avalanche risks have also surged above 1,000 metres in the mountains. Drivers are being advised to slow down and stay alert, as roads may become hazardous. Local officials recommend avoiding unnecessary travel in upland areas until conditions improve.

The warnings come as low cloud and unstable snowpack create dangerous conditions. Residents and tourists should follow safety advice to avoid accidents in the coming days.
