Sochi and Gelendzhik airports reopen after brief security shutdowns

Airports in Sochi and Gelendzhik have reopened after a brief shutdown due to security concerns. The restrictions The closures began on May 1, with Gelendzhik halting flights from 6:00 PM and Sochi following at 7:13 PM. Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsiya) stated that the measures were essential for flight safety. By May 2, both airports removed all restrictions on arrivals and departures.

Krasnodar International Airport marked a milestone on the same day, serving its one-millionth passenger in 2026. The facility’s expanded spring-summer schedule now connects travellers to 26 destinations. International routes for the summer season include Turkey, Armenia, Georgia, and Egypt. The temporary shutdowns did not disrupt long-term operations. With the alert lifted, airports in the region returned to full capacity, ensuring smooth travel for passengers and airlines alike.

The resumption of flights comes as a relief to passengers and airlines operating in the region. Krasnodar Krai’s airports are now functioning normally, with expanded routes and growing passenger numbers. The incident highlights ongoing efforts to balance security with the demands of busy travel hubs.
