Iloilo City launches ₱74M sustainable transport project with cycling hubs

A P74-million project to boost sustainable transport has officially begun in Iloilo City. The initiative, funded by the national government, will introduce new cycling facilities and urban improvements. A launch ceremony took place at the Esplanade 3 Skate Park to mark the start of construction. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is covering the full cost of the project, meaning no city funds will be used. Iloilo becomes the second city in the country to receive this investment, following Marikina City.

Four key locations, including the Esplanade and Freedom Grandstand, will host new End-of-Trip (EOT) facilities. These will offer secure bicycle parking, showers, changing rooms, and lockers to encourage cycling for work or school. Beyond cycling infrastructure, the project also includes urban shading structures and upgraded public transport stops. The aim is to create a more comfortable and connected environment for commuters.

The new facilities will provide practical support for cyclists and improve public spaces. With no financial burden on the city, the project represents a direct national investment in Iloilo’s transport future. Construction is now underway at the designated sites.
