Seismic Activity Strikes Delhi-NCR, Northern India, and Bihar, Causing Major Shaking

On the 17th of February, 2025, a significant earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, wreaked havoc in northern India. The quake originated approximately 250 kilometers north of Delhi, in Nepal. The epicenter caused powerful tremors to ripple through Delhi-NCR and several other regions, including Bihar.

In Delhi-NCR, buildings, offices, and homes trembled violently as people rushed into the streets for safety. Connaught Place, Saket, and Noida were among the areas hit hardest by the seemingly endless shaking, lasting around 20-30 seconds. Many tall buildings swayed, while even those in mid-workday found themselves alarmed enough to evacuate their workplaces.

Arvind Sharma, a Dwarka resident, described the terrifying experience of rushing out of his home, along with his neighbors, into a chaotic scene on the streets. Similar scenarios unfolded in the heart of Delhi, where office workers and shoppers in malls were jolted by sudden tremors, prompting immediate evacuations. The Metro service was halted briefly, while traffic came to a standstill as people abandoned their vehicles and sought open spaces.

Fortunately, despite the earthquake's considerable strength, initial reports indicate no major structural damage or fatalities. However, the tremors induced widespread panic and fear. In Delhi, the quick response from local authorities, who activated emergency procedures, showcased the city's preparedness in handling such events.

Bihar, too, was affected, with Patna and Muzaffarpur experiencing intense shaking. Older buildings in the state displayed signs of cracking, but there have been no immediate reports of significant structural damage or casualties. Residents across various districts in Bihar, including Bhagalpur and Darbhanga, also felt the tremors, although the damage was relatively minor.

This earthquake extended its impact well beyond Delhi and Bihar, with neighboring states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab also feeling the ground shake. Cities like Lucknow, Agra, and Chandigarh experienced tremors, but no major damage has been confirmed yet.

Experts have warned that aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days. Despite the initial quake's power, experts believe the worst has passed for now. The epicenter was situated in Nepal, a region known for its seismic activity, due to the convergence of tectonic plates beneath the Himalayas.

Disaster preparedness remains crucial, especially for old infrastructure, which remains vulnerable. Authorities have long emphasized the need for better enforcement of building codes and public education on disaster preparedness. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) remains on high alert, working closely with local authorities to address any issues arising from the earthquake's aftermath and providing swift relief wherever necessary.

As residents across the affected areas begin the process of recovery, they are reminded once more of the region's vulnerability to seismic activity, urging ongoing vigilance and preparation for future events.
