Saxony-Anhalt's 2026 Pride season breaks records with 13 events amid rising threats

Saxony-Anhalt's Pride Season Kicks Off in Schönebeck with "Choose Diversity!"

This Saturday, April 25, the Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Schönebeck will launch this year's Pride season under the motto "Choose Diversity!"—a statewide celebration of acceptance, respect, and equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, inter, and queer people.

With a record 13 street festivals planned across the region, 2026 promises the most extensive CSD program to date. A standout event is the inaugural Dyke*March, which will spotlight the visibility of lesbian lived realities. The state's Equal Opportunity Commissioner has taken on patronage for the march, underscoring a key political priority: even within the queer community, targeted efforts are needed to amplify visibility and participation.

Equal Opportunity Minister Petra Grimm-Benne advocates for embracing diversity in everyday life: "Christopher Street Day is far more than a celebration of joy—it's a statement of visibility and democratic commitment. CSDs stand for the right to live and love freely and safely, while reminding us that equality is not a given. The queer community is an indispensable part of Saxony-Anhalt."

Nationwide, 2,048 anti-queer crimes were recorded in 2025—an average of more than five attacks per day. Violence against trans, inter, and non-binary individuals surged by 35% compared to 2024, while at least 110 of the 245 planned CSD events faced disruptions. Grimm-Benne warns: "The rise in anti-queer violence is alarming. We must all take a clear, resolute stand against homo- and transphobia. Protecting those targeted for their sexual orientation or gender identity—whether through harassment, hate, or violence—remains a societal and governmental duty. Safeguarding spaces, strengthening prevention, and combating queer-hostile violence with consistency are our shared responsibility." Against this backdrop, CSD also symbolizes courage and determination in the fight for LSBTIQ rights. "Making diversity visible and pushing back against hate isn't just for Christopher Street Day—it's our year-round mission,"* the minister emphasizes.

The upcoming state program "Queer in Saxony-Anhalt" will establish a binding framework for prevention, protection, and inclusion. Its goals include enhancing existing structures, bolstering safety measures for public events, and ensuring sustainable support for civil society actors. The initiative will also expand prevention and counseling services. Grimm-Benne plans to present the program to the cabinet in May.

The origins of CSD trace back to June 28, 1969, when New York police raided the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street. For the first time, lesbians, gay men, and trans individuals resisted police brutality, sparking days of unrest. Commemorating these events, Pride and CSD parades are now held worldwide. Saxony-Anhalt's first CSD took place in1996*, rotating annually between Halle, Dessau, and Magdeburg. In recent years, both the number of host cities and participants have grown steadily, making the CSD season a cornerstone of the region's commitment to diversity and democracy.
