Pokrovsk's Uhuyaktuou Festival Celebrates Yakut Culture and Renewal on May 16
Pokrovsk is gearing up for its annual Uhuyaktuou: Energy of the Great River icebreak festival on May 16. The event, named after a Yakut word meaning awakening, rebirth, renewal, will transform the town’s waterfront and boulevard into a hub of cultural and community activities. Organisers expect strong interest after the first festival in 2022 attracted over four thousand visitors. The festival will kick off with a mix of traditional and modern entertainment. Traditional Yamshchik Gatherings—featuring pancakes and folk songs—will run alongside mini-games of Manchaary, a classic Yakut sport. An open-air market, brand fair, and exhibition of local crafts will also showcase the region’s artisans.
Live music will take centre stage, with performances by popular Yakut pop stars. Creative workshops, a food festival, and a concert are all part of the lineup. Beyond the celebrations, the event will host a strategic session of the Tourism Development Coordination Council. One highlight will be the presentation of Pokrovsk’s new master plan. The document outlines future development for the town, tying into the festival’s theme of renewal and growth.
The festival blends cultural heritage with forward-looking discussions. Residents and visitors will enjoy food, music, and sports while learning about Pokrovsk’s future plans. With last year’s attendance as a benchmark, organisers aim to build on the event’s early success.
