Philadelphia tenants endure 83°F indoors as AC fails amid heatwave
Residents at Park Terrace Apartments in Philadelphia are facing extreme indoor heat as their air conditioning remains out of order. With temperatures inside some flats reaching 83 degrees, frustration is growing among the 183 households—many of which include elderly, young, or medically vulnerable people. The air conditioning system was meant to be switched on over a week ago, but technical issues have left many units without cooling. Mary Laughlin, one of the affected tenants, reported her apartment hitting 83 degrees by morning, with the heat only worsening as the day progresses. Despite using three fans, she described the conditions as unbearable.
Lorrie Reilly had to remove her cats from her overheated flat, expressing concern for neighbours—particularly older residents and families with young children. Some tenants have criticised Rushmore Management for the delay, demanding clearer answers about the ongoing problems. In response, the management company has opened the air-conditioned lounge and yoga room from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. as temporary relief. They have also stated that repairs should be finished by Thursday, coinciding with the end of the current heat wave.
The situation has left many residents dissatisfied, with calls for better communication and faster action. Until repairs are completed, affected tenants will continue relying on shared cooling spaces or their own fans. Rushmore Management maintains that the issue will be resolved before the peak heat subsides.
