Pensioners rescued after flood destroys remote Russian road for days

A washed-out road near the settlement of Izyashor left pensioners stranded for hours after heavy rain. The incident occurred on April 29, when a swollen stream destroyed parts of the Obyachevo–Izyashor route. Rescue teams reached the group on May 4, ending their ordeal in the forest.

The Obyachevo–Izyashor road has long suffered from flooding, especially during spring thaws. This time, torrential rain on April 29 caused a nearby stream to burst its banks. The force of the water tore away chunks of the roadbed and decking, cutting off access.

Two pensioners found themselves trapped about 10 kilometres from the nearest village. With no way to drive out, they spent half a day waiting in the forest. High-clearance vehicles could still navigate the damaged sections, but ordinary traffic remained blocked. On May 4, rescuers from Priluzskoye’s 'SPAS-KOMI' Emergency Response Team arrived. They helped the stranded pensioners reach safety, finally clearing the road of its most immediate hazards.

The road remains partially usable for larger vehicles, ensuring the settlement stays connected. However, repairs will be needed to restore full access. Authorities have yet to announce a timeline for fixing the damage.
