Penei Sewell returns to left tackle as Lions reshuffle offensive line
The Detroit Lions are moving Penei Sewell back to left tackle for the upcoming season. This change follows Taylor Decker’s departure after he requested his release in the offseason. Sewell, originally drafted as a left tackle, has spent most of his career on the right side since his rookie year. The Lions selected Sewell seventh overall in 2021, intending for him to play left tackle. But an injury to Decker early that season forced Sewell to start his first eight games on the left. Midway through his rookie campaign, the team shifted him to right tackle, where he remained for the next four-plus seasons.
Over five years, Sewell has started 83 regular-season games and four playoff matches. His performance has earned him first-team All-Pro honours three times and Pro Bowl selections in four straight seasons. Only three Hall of Famers—Anthony Munoz, Tony Boselli, and Joe Thomas—have matched or exceeded his achievements in their first five years.
Coach Dan Campbell has praised Sewell’s versatility, suggesting he could also play guard or even tight end if needed. Now, with Decker gone, the Lions are returning Sewell to his original position on the left side. The switch places Sewell among the league’s top left tackles once again. His consistency and athleticism give Detroit a reliable anchor on the offensive line. The move also fills the gap left by Decker’s exit ahead of the new season.
