Northeast Super League unites cities with football, tourism, and culture
A new football league is set to bring together cities across Northeast China. The Northeast Super League will feature eight teams from four provinces, marking the country’s first inter-provincial city competition. Organisers hope the event will blend sports, tourism, and local culture to boost regional growth. The league aims to strengthen ties between sports, commerce, and tourism in the region. Local governments see football matches as a way to attract visitors and revive weekend economies. In Longyan, for example, a match ticket grants free entry to 45 top-rated tourist sites.
Similar efforts have already shown success elsewhere. The Jiangsu Football City League in 2025 drew 25.117 million visitors on game days—a 17.38% increase from the previous year. Guangzhou also used sports events to promote tourism, offering free or discounted entry to over 100 attractions during the 16th China Tourism Day. Experts note that combining sports with travel is becoming more popular. Liu Simin of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences observed that fans now plan trips around matches. These events also help tourists discover local culture and resources beyond the stadium.
The Northeast Super League will kick off with eight city teams competing across four provinces. Free entry to attractions and rising visitor numbers suggest sports tourism is gaining momentum. The initiative could set a model for other regions looking to merge leisure, culture, and economic growth.
