Moscow braces for wild weather swings from heat to storms this week

Moscow is set for a week of shifting weather, from potential record heat to thunderstorms and a sharp cooldown. The final days of May will bring a mix of subtropical warmth and unstable conditions before a cold front arrives.

The week begins with a chance of record-breaking temperatures on Monday and Tuesday. Forecasters warn that May 20 and 21 could see unusually high readings for this time of year.

From Wednesday, the city will face unstable atmospheric conditions. Despite the early heat, subtropical spikes in Moscow rarely last long. By the weekend, a cold front will sweep through, bringing thunderstorms and hail. Saturday’s highs will drop to 16–19°C (61–66°F), a noticeable change from earlier warmth. Sunday will see a slight recovery, with temperatures climbing back to 20–23°C (68–73°F). After the storms, the city can expect a clear but cooler end to the week.

The final week of May will deliver a mix of extremes—brief heat, heavy storms, and a sudden temperature dip. Residents should prepare for rapid changes as the month draws to a close.
