Miguel Tellado set to assume role as Secretary General of the PP, with Ester Muñoz becoming their spokesperson in Congress

Ester Muñoz, a seasoned politician from the Popular Party (PP), has been appointed as the new spokesperson for the PP in Spain's Lower House (Congress of Deputies), effective immediately. This appointment was announced by the party leader, Alberto Nuñez Feijoo, who named Muñoz to replace the outgoing spokesperson, Miguel Tellado.

Tellado, who has been serving as the PP's spokesperson since October 2023, will now assume the role of secretary general of the party. This change marks a significant shift in the party's leadership, with Tellado moving up the ranks to become Feijoo's second-in-command.

Ester Muñoz's appointment comes after a successful career in politics, which began in the PP of Castile and León. She made her debut in national politics after the 2015 elections, when she was elected as a senator for León. Her rise through the ranks continued in 2023, when she was appointed as the vice-secretary of Health and Education by Feijoo.

Muñoz is known for her incisive contributions in parliamentary debates and has been entrusted with leading the PP's strategy in the Congress. This appointment is seen as a strategic move by Feijoo, as Muñoz is expected to carry forward a firm discourse in opposition to the current government.

The change in leadership comes ahead of the upcoming PP congress, where further leadership and organizational adjustments are expected. Notably, Cuca Gamarra, the current secretary general of the Popular Party, has announced her resignation and will step down after requesting relief from Feijoo. Cuca Gamarra will be succeeded by Gamarra herself, who will assume responsibility for justice, interior, and defense at the upcoming congress.

The appointment of Tellado as secretary general and Muñoz as spokesperson is part of Feijoo's objective of building a more frontal opposition to the Executive of Pedro Sanchez. This change also follows the transfer of powers from Esteban Gonzalez Pons, who was the vice-secretary, to Cuca Gamarra before this official change.

Miguel Tellado's move to the national level was solidified in 2022, when he joined the PP's hard core in Madrid as vice-secretary of Organization. His tenure as spokesperson in the Parliament began in 2014, during Feijoo's presidency of the Xunta (Galician government). Tellado was also elected as a Galician deputy in 2012.

The upcoming national congress has been advanced almost a year to reorganize the party ahead of the general elections. This reorganization is expected to further strengthen the PP's opposition to the current government and position the party for success in the upcoming elections.
