Michael Penix Jr. fights to reclaim Falcons' starting QB role after ACL injury

Michael Penix Jr. faces a tough battle to keep his starting spot with the Atlanta Falcons for the 2026 season. The quarterback is recovering from a torn ACL suffered in 2025, while the team has just signed Tua Tagovailoa as competition. Meanwhile, the NFL’s 2026 schedule will be unveiled this Thursday. Penix’s road to recovery comes after a serious knee injury cut short his 2025 season. His absence has opened the door for Tagovailoa, who joined the Falcons on a one-year, $1.3 million deal. The Dolphins released Tagovailoa earlier this year after he threw a career-high 15 interceptions in 14 games.

New head coach Kevin Stefanski now has a decision to make. If Penix isn’t ready for Week 1, Tagovailoa is expected to take the field as the starting quarterback. The competition adds pressure as the 2026 campaign approaches.

Off the field, Penix recently celebrated his wedding to Olivia Carter, a former soccer player at the University of Nevada. The couple, engaged since 2024, shared photos from their ceremony on social media. Carter, a Washington native, first met Penix while he was playing football in the state. Several Falcons teammates attended the event, showing their support for the quarterback. The Falcons’ quarterback situation remains uncertain as the 2026 season nears. Penix’s fitness will determine whether he starts or if Tagovailoa steps in. Meanwhile, the team’s new coaching staff will closely watch the competition unfold.
