Massachusetts honors Trooper Kevin Trainor killed in wrong-way crash

A memorial ceremony has honoured fallen Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor, who died in the line of duty last week. His family joined law enforcement officials and other grieving relatives at the annual event. Governor Maura Healey praised his bravery, saying his actions likely saved lives. Trooper Trainor was killed on Wednesday while attempting to stop a wrong-way driver on Route 1 in Lynnfield. A Jeep driven by 50-year-old Hernan Marrero crashed head-on into Trainor’s unmarked cruiser, killing both men instantly.

At the memorial, Trainor’s mother and four siblings sat in the front row. Larry Calderone, President of the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation, paid tribute to Trainor and other fallen officers. Caitlin Tarentino, whose brother Ronald Tarentino was also killed in the line of duty, offered her condolences to Trainor’s family.

Governor Healey later met with transportation officials to discuss better technology for detecting and alerting wrong-way drivers. Meanwhile, Trainor’s fiancée shared an emotional Instagram post in his memory.

A funeral Mass for Trooper Trainor will take place on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. James Church in Salem. The ceremony highlighted the risks officers face while protecting the public. Trainor’s death has prompted discussions on improving road safety measures. His funeral will provide an opportunity for the community to pay their final respects.
