Jonathan Brown opens up about brain tumour battle and emotional recovery

Former Brisbane Lions captain Jonathan Brown has revealed his battle with a low-grade brain tumour. Diagnosed in March 2023, the AFL legend underwent surgery the same month. Doctors have since confirmed the tumour was successfully removed. Brown’s health scare began earlier this year when he received the diagnosis. The news left his son, Jack, visibly emotional. Yet, amid the uncertainty, a small moment of hope arrived—a ray of sunshine that lifted Brown’s spirits.

Surgeons operated in March, removing the tumour and leaving behind a significant amount of metal in his skull. His recovery has been strong, with Brown now preparing to return to Fox Footy in the coming weeks.

Family has played a central role in Brown’s journey. He often walks along the Gold Coast beach, speaking to his late mother, Mary, who died suddenly from a brain haemorrhage three years ago. The father of three—Olivia, Jack, and Macy—has remained focused on his health and loved ones throughout the ordeal. Brown’s surgery was a success, and his return to television is imminent. The former AFL star continues to recover well, supported by his children and the memory of his mother. His story has highlighted both the challenges of a serious diagnosis and the strength found in family ties.
