Men in Black Birthday Bash returns with alien-themed fun and history
The annual Men in Black Birthday Bash (MIBBB) returns on Saturday, June 20, blending sci-fi fun with local history. This year’s event merges last year’s Colleen Rafferty Alien Abductee Lookalike Contest into the festivities. Organisers promise an evening of comedy, music, and themed celebrations at the Quarterdeck in Des Moines. The Bash marks the 1947 Maury Island Incident, a pivotal moment in Men in Black mythology. This strange event near Tacoma inspired decades of conspiracy theories and pop culture. The festival, known as MIBBB Fest, has grown into a flagship gathering for fans of the lore.
This year’s 21+ event kicks off with the 'Great Synchronization,' a countdown at 6:22 p.m. Attendees can dress as Colleen Rafferty—the famous alien abductee—or other extraterrestrial-themed characters for a lookalike contest. Podcaster Shea Drury and Scott Schaefer of South King Media will play government agents during the competition. The night will also feature live comedy, storytelling, and a dance party with DJ Lumen Fluxa. Tickets are available now on EventBrite, with all activities centred at the Quarterdeck.
The Men in Black Birthday Bash combines humour, history, and sci-fi fandom in one evening. The event honours a 77-year-old mystery while offering entertainment for attendees. Those interested in joining can secure their spots through EventBrite before the June 20 celebration.
