McIlroy eyes redemption at Quail Hollow after PGA Championship stumble

Rory McIlroy returns to Quail Hollow this week as the favourite for the Truist Championship. The world number two has a strong history at the course, having claimed his first PGA Tour win there 16 years ago. Despite a disappointing performance at last month’s PGA Championship, he remains confident ahead of the tournament. McIlroy has dominated at Quail Hollow in the past. He secured his maiden PGA Tour victory at the venue in 2010 and has since won there four times. Last year, he triumphed by five shots, reinforcing his comfort on the course.

His recent form, however, has been mixed. At the 2025 PGA Championship, also held at Quail Hollow, he finished tied for 47th. Yet, the 35-year-old insists he feels refreshed after a three-week break and more determined than ever. He described the upcoming stretch—including the U.S. Open—as a crucial period in his season.

Bookmakers still back McIlroy as the slight favourite for this week’s event, offering odds of +600. Cameron Young follows as the second favourite at +850. McIlroy has also reflected on his recent Masters win, calling it proof of his hard work paying off. The Truist Championship marks McIlroy’s chance to bounce back after a rare off-week at Quail Hollow. With four wins at the course and a commanding victory last year, he enters the tournament with both experience and confidence. His performance this week could set the tone for the rest of his major season.
