Mainz swelters at 30°C with pools closed and Rhine swimming banned

Mainz faces a hot Pentecost weekend with temperatures hitting 30°C, but cooling off won’t be easy. Many of the city’s outdoor pools are closed or restricted, leaving residents with few options for a swim. Authorities have also warned against swimming in the Rhine due to deadly underwater currents. The Maaraue lido, a popular spot, remains closed all year for major renovations. Work includes installing stainless steel pool linings and building a new spray park. Meanwhile, Taubertsbergbad opened on May 20, 2026, but with partial restrictions because of ongoing construction. It will then shut completely from June 15 to June 19 for dome removal.

With limited municipal pools available, the Mainz-Mombach pool is the only fully operational option. Water playgrounds in Volkspark, Fort Elisabeth, and Goetheplatz offer some relief, though the one in Hartenberg is closed for repairs. For those willing to travel, nearby alternatives include Rheinhessen-Bad in Nieder-Olm, Rheinwelle leisure pool in Gau-Algesheim, and Bingen’s natural pool. However, officials strongly discourage swimming in the Rhine, where powerful currents pose serious risks.

The heatwave arrives as Mainz struggles with reduced pool access. Renovations and safety concerns limit choices, pushing residents toward neighbouring towns for swimming. The city’s warnings about the Rhine underscore the dangers of seeking relief in the river.
