Mainz sports foundation celebrates first year with bold expansion plans

The Mainz and Rheinhessen Sports Foundation marked its first anniversary with a well-attended general meeting. Around 60 guests from sports, business, and civil society gathered to review progress and discuss future plans. The event highlighted the growing support for local sports initiatives in the region. The foundation was established a year ago to create an independent platform for sustainable sports promotion. Since then, it has built a network of 84 supporters across eleven sports, including twelve German champions and seven Bundesliga players. Initial funding came from events and donation drives, with contributions from clubs like ASC Theresianum Mainz, Mainz 05, and TSC Mainz.

At the meeting, the foundation announced three new institutional sponsors and over ten new members for its supporters' circle. Plans for this year include backing at least three major events: a Bundesliga handball match, tennis tournaments, and a wrestling competition.

Key figures shared their support during the event. Mainz’s sports commissioner, Daniel Köbler, urged broader public involvement and better sports facilities. Decathlon world champion Niklas Kaul spoke about how sports shape personal growth. U23 European decathlon champion Andreas Bechmann also sent a video message, stressing the wider societal benefits of sports. The foundation’s first year has laid a strong base for future projects. With expanded sponsorship and a growing network, it aims to boost sports opportunities in Mainz and Rheinhessen. More events and infrastructure improvements are expected as the initiative moves forward.
