Maharashtra's bold push to transform its coastline into a shipbuilding powerhouse

The Maharashtra government is pushing ahead with plans to develop shipbuilding and maritime infrastructure along its coastline. Three key locations—Nandgaon, Dighi, and Vijaydurg—have been shortlisted for major investments in shipping and allied industries. Officials are now preparing detailed assessments to attract private sector participation.

A high-level meeting led by Minister Nitesh Rane set the process in motion. Officials were directed to carry out field surveys and technical evaluations at the three sites. Preliminary layouts have already been drafted, with shipbuilding facilities expected to be built on reclaimed land.

Nandgaon, located in Palghar district around 140 km from Mumbai, stands out due to its strategic position near the Tarapur Atomic Power Station. The area also benefits from strong transport links, including access to national highways and the Dedicated Freight Corridor. However, its geological challenges—loose sediment and shallow rocky formations—mean extensive dredging would be necessary. Environmental concerns have also been raised, as parts of Nandgaon fall under CRZ-1 and CRZ-3 coastal regulation zones. In Sindhudurg, officials were instructed to identify nearly 30 acres of land for potential development. Minister Rane emphasised the need for a detailed review of forest clearances before moving forward. The government aims to compile preliminary reports and technical data to make the sites more appealing to private investors.

The project marks a strategic effort to boost Maharashtra’s maritime sector. If successful, the developments at Nandgaon, Dighi, and Vijaydurg could position the state as a key hub for shipbuilding and shipping. The next steps involve finalising land allocations, securing clearances, and preparing the ground for private investment.
