Maharashtra speeds up rural road projects to combat El Niño job risks

Maharashtra’s Employment Guarantee Scheme Minister, Bharat Gogawale, has directed officials to fast-track farm and access road projects under the Matoshri Gram Samruddhi Scheme. During a recent review meeting, he emphasised the need for large-scale rural employment, especially with concerns over a possible El Niño situation looming. Gogawale held discussions on the progress of MGNREGA and the Matoshri Gram Samruddhi Yojana, focusing on job creation, farmer support, and rural infrastructure. He noted that the central government had expanded the scope of gram panchayat projects, allowing over 20 types of works to be undertaken.

The minister instructed officials to prioritise state-approved farm and access road projects. He also ordered them to prepare cost estimates for sanctioned works, secure necessary approvals, and generate work codes without delay. Additionally, Gogawale called for the immediate issuance of work commencement orders and the clearance of pending attendance records. Despite the Centre passing the V.B.G. Ram Ji Act 2025, it has not yet taken effect. For now, MGNREGA continues to operate under the existing system. Employment Guarantee Scheme Department Secretary Appasaheb Dhulaj and other senior officials attended the meeting.

The push for faster implementation aims to boost rural employment and strengthen infrastructure ahead of potential climate challenges. Officials have been tasked with ensuring that approved projects move forward quickly, with a focus on farm and access roads under the Matoshri Gram Samruddhi Scheme.
