Maharashtra turns flyover spaces into electric bus charging hubs by 2035
The Maharashtra government is turning unused spaces beneath flyovers into charging hubs for electric buses. This move aims to tackle the shortage of land for charging stations, particularly in crowded urban areas. Officials see it as a smart and affordable way to support the state’s shift to electric transport. A recent high-level meeting focused on expanding charging infrastructure for the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). The corporation plans to convert its entire bus fleet to electric by 2035, with the state targeting a broader shift to electric mobility by 2047.
Several flyovers under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) have large vacant areas underneath. These spaces are now being repurposed as charging stations for MSRTC’s growing electric bus network.
Under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the state aims to set up at least 200 charging stations across Maharashtra. Better charging facilities are expected to boost the efficiency of electric buses and improve public transport services statewide. The initiative addresses a key challenge: finding space for charging infrastructure in cities. By using existing structures, the government avoids high land costs while pushing forward its electric mobility goals. The plan also supports MSRTC’s target of a fully electric fleet within the next decade.
