Magadan kindergarten fixes leaks but faces new earthquake damage
Our website, April 24 – The key question on the deputy's mind was how the educational institution had weathered last autumn and was faring this spring. Last year, the facility managed to secure a major roof overhaul. Before that, heavy rains and melting snow had repeatedly flooded the kindergarten from the second floor down for years. Many rooms had to be left unused due to dampness and mold, according to the press service of Magadan's City Duma.
"Today, we confirmed that the repairs were done properly. The rooms are warm and dry. Even in the group that suffered the most from moisture—where the walls took three months to dry after the renovation—children are now playing and resting. I'm pleased with the outcome," emphasized Pavel Bezmenov, Deputy Chairman of the Magadan City Duma.
Yet challenges remain at Kindergarten No. 42. One issue has grown particularly urgent since the recent earthquake: the front porch has shifted, its structure deteriorating and now in need of major repairs.
"We will do our best to support the institution. We'll assess what can be done here. In the near future, with help from a social partner, we plan to cover the steps with a special anti-slip surface to prevent children and parents from slipping," Bezmenov explained. "Another topic we discussed was preparing for summer. The kindergarten needs assistance restoring its outdoor structures, which have lost their appearance over winter. The fence, benches, and playground equipment all need a fresh coat of paint. But first, we have to clear the snowdrifts left behind by winter—especially on the north side of the building, where the lack of sunlight slows the thaw."
