Langen's district heating expansion brings major road closures until 2027
Major construction work is set to begin in Langen next month as part of an ongoing effort to expand the city’s district heating network. The project in Elisabethenstraße marks the second phase of a new long-distance heating pipeline, designed to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Residents and commuters should prepare for extended road closures and disruptions until late 2027. Starting in early June, Elisabethenstraße will become a construction site between Alter Römerstraße and Westendstraße. The work will roll out in stages, with full road closures expected in multiple sections for around a year and a half. This phase is a key part of Stadtwerke Langen’s plan to extend the district heating system, ensuring supply to existing areas while connecting new districts in the north and south of the city.
The project aligns with Langen’s broader heat transition strategy, which aims to eliminate fossil fuels by 2045. Renewable energy and unavoidable waste heat will replace older systems, cutting emissions and improving sustainability. Alongside the heating pipeline, crews will also replace the ageing drinking water main between Weserstraße and Westendstraße, taking advantage of the excavation work to upgrade essential infrastructure. Construction is scheduled to last until the end of 2027. During this time, traffic diversions and temporary restrictions will remain in place. Stadtwerke Langen has assured residents that updates on progress and potential delays will be shared regularly.
Once completed, the new pipeline will strengthen Langen’s district heating network and support the city’s shift to cleaner energy. The upgraded drinking water main will also improve reliability for local households. Both measures form part of a long-term plan to modernise infrastructure while meeting climate targets by 2045.
