Kyle Teel's return delayed by new knee injury during rehab stint

Chicago White Sox catcher Kyle Teel has suffered a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury. The 24-year-old, who was on a minor league rehab assignment, tweaked his right knee during a game with Triple-A Charlotte. Manager Will Venable confirmed the new issue will keep Teel out of Sunday’s lineup.

Teel was drafted in the first round of the 2023 amateur draft but missed the start of this season due to a right hamstring strain. The injury happened while he was playing for Italy in the World Baseball Classic. He joined the White Sox in December 2024 as part of the trade that sent pitcher Garrett Crochet to the Boston Red Sox.

In his debut season with Chicago, Teel posted a .273 batting average with eight home runs and 35 RBIs over 78 games. His latest setback occurred during his fourth game with the Knights, when he felt knee discomfort in his final at-bat on Saturday. Meanwhile, the White Sox are managing other injury updates. Outfielder Austin Hays, on the 10-day injured list with a left calf strain, will start a rehab assignment with Charlotte on Tuesday. However, infielder Prelander Berroa has been pulled from his own rehab stint due to right elbow inflammation.

Teel’s knee soreness adds another delay to his return, following his earlier hamstring issue. The White Sox will continue monitoring his progress while adjusting their roster around ongoing injury concerns. Hays’ rehab assignment marks a step toward his return, though Berroa’s elbow problem creates further uncertainty.
