Krasnodar Krai revives rivers with 20,000 trout amid highway construction boom

A major environmental initiative is underway in Krasnodar Krai as part of the Adler bypass construction. The project, costing over 100 billion rubles, includes releasing thousands of young trout into local rivers. Authorities aim to balance infrastructure growth with the protection of natural resources. The Russian Transport Ministry announced the release of around 20,000 young Black Sea trout into the upper Mzymta River. This effort follows a larger programme in 2023, when over 1.5 million fry were introduced into the Kuban River.

The trout stocking forms part of Avtodor’s environmental strategy, designed to offset the impact of road construction. The Adler bypass, set to open in 2027, will connect Sochi, Adler Airport, and Sirius. Its purpose is to streamline logistics and reduce traffic in the region’s busy resort zones. The bypass project continues to move forward, with environmental measures playing a key role. By releasing trout and preserving water ecosystems, officials hope to mitigate the effects of large-scale development. The road is expected to bring long-term improvements to transport in Krasnodar Krai.
