Kazakhstan's aviation boom takes flight with New York and Tokyo routes by 2027
Kazakhstan is expanding its aviation sector with major projects and new international routes. The country aims to launch direct flights from Astana to New York by 2027, alongside upgrades to airports and air navigation systems. These developments follow a year of record passenger numbers and increased airline capacity. In 2025, Kazakhstan’s airports handled 32 million passengers and 173,000 tons of cargo. Air Astana alone boosted its capacity by 14% that year and plans to add 16 new destinations in 2026.
The government is investing heavily in infrastructure. Four new airports are under construction in Katon-Karagai, Zaisan, Kenderli, and Arkalyk. The Kenderli airport in Mangystau Region will open in late 2026 after an initial investment of 56.9 billion tenge (US$112 million). To support regional connectivity, 6.4 billion tenge (US$12.6 million) has been allocated to subsidise 24 key domestic routes. Meanwhile, the country is modernising its air navigation systems over the next five years. Kazakhstan also seeks to strengthen international links. Direct flights from Astana to Tokyo are set to begin by the end of 2026. For US routes, the country is working to achieve FAA Category 1 status by November 2026. This certification would allow Kazakh airlines to operate direct flights to American cities, including the planned 2027 Astana-New York service. The nation’s aviation sector ranks among the top 20 globally for oversight, according to ICAO assessments.
The expansion of airports, new routes, and infrastructure upgrades will increase Kazakhstan’s air travel capacity. Direct flights to Tokyo and New York will connect the country to major global hubs. These changes follow steady growth in passenger numbers and cargo traffic over recent years.
