Guillermo Ochoa eyes historic sixth World Cup with Mexico at 38

Guillermo Ochoa is aiming for a historic sixth World Cup appearance with Mexico. The veteran goalkeeper remains determined to secure his place in Javier Aguirre’s squad. Despite not yet being named in the final roster, he sees this stage of his career as both challenging and thrilling. Ochoa missed the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup but stayed involved as a leader off the pitch. His absence from the tournament did not dampen his ambition, and he now hopes to earn a starting spot for the World Cup. Raúl 'Tala' Rangel currently looks set to begin Mexico’s opening match against South Africa.

The 38-year-old faces competition from Rangel and Carlos Acevedo for the goalkeeper role. Ochoa views his potential return to the national team as a personal test, one he is eager to embrace. He insists he still has much to contribute, describing himself as full of energy and motivation.

Beyond his performance in matches, Ochoa stresses the importance of actions away from the field. He believes professionalism and leadership play a key role in football at every level. Ochoa’s inclusion in the World Cup squad remains uncertain, but his experience and drive could prove vital. If selected, he would become one of the few players to feature in six editions of the tournament. The final decision now rests with Aguirre as preparations continue.
