Germany's water crisis deepens as droughts drain rivers and groundwater

Germany is facing growing water shortages as droughts and dry spells take their toll. Despite heavy winter rains, groundwater levels remain critically low in many areas. Authorities are now urging households and farms to use water more carefully as summer approaches. Lower Saxony’s Environment Minister Christian Meyer has warned of worsening conditions, with rivers drying up and groundwater supplies shrinking. Data shows 93 of 161 monitoring stations in the region report below-average groundwater levels, while nine have hit record lows. Reservoirs in the Harz Mountains currently sit at just 64% capacity—well below the usual 78%.

Climate change is making the problem worse, with Germany already 2.5°C warmer than in the past. Rising evaporation and reduced water seeping into aquifers threaten both ecosystems and human supply. Over the upcoming Pentecost weekend, temperatures could reach 30°C, further straining water resources. Experts say long-term solutions are needed, including river restoration, better water retention, and reducing soil sealing. Without action, shortages could become more severe in the coming months.

The current water crisis demands immediate changes in how water is managed. Households and farms must cut back during scarcity periods, while broader measures are required to secure future supplies. With summer weather set to intensify, the pressure on Germany’s water systems will only grow.
