Germany's Free Comic Day Returns With Free Titles for All Ages
Free Comic Day is returning to Germany on the first Saturday in May. The annual event, inspired by a similar tradition in the U.S., will see libraries and bookshops handing out free comics to readers of all ages. This year’s focus includes young fans, as well as those simply young at heart.
The initiative comes as comics—especially Asian titles—remain the fastest-growing segment of the German book market. Libraries and bookstores nationwide will take part, offering free Kids & Teens comics from major publishers. In Salzgitter, residents can pick up their copies at the Stadtbibliothek in Lebenstedt and the Stadtbibliothek Salzgitter-Bad during normal opening times.
Demand for comics continues to rise across age groups. Barbara Henning, deputy director of the Stadtbibliothek, noted that children, teens, and adults alike are increasingly drawn to the medium. The event aims to make comics even more accessible to a broad audience. Free Comic Day provides an opportunity for new readers to explore the world of comics without cost. With Asian titles leading market growth, the event also highlights the expanding variety of styles and stories available. Participating locations will distribute comics while stocks last.
