Germany Experiences Shift from Scorching Heat to Potent Thunderstorms, Temperature Drop Predicted

Germany Braces for Warm Weekend and Possible Thunderstorms

As the weekend approaches, parts of Germany are expected to see temperatures rising above 30 degrees Celsius, with humidity levels set to rise as well, according to the German Meteorological Service (DWD). The weather service warns of the risk of severe thunderstorms, especially in the western and southwestern regions of the country.

At present, a high-pressure system is bringing partly sunny weather, particularly to the south. Northern regions, however, are expected to see cooler temperatures, brisk west winds, and overcast skies, with little to no precipitation for the remainder of Friday. Southern and central areas will see temperatures rise to at least 25 degrees Celsius, with the Upper Rhine region potentially reaching 30 degrees.

Saturday will see temperatures soar in the southwest, reaching as high as 31 degrees. Meteorologist Tobias Reinartz of the DWD notes that the air will grow increasingly humid, and more charging is expected to occur throughout the day. Severe thunderstorms could then begin in the west, eventually spreading eastwards and affecting the central regions of Germany. Heavy rain, hail, and strong wind gusts are all possible in these storms, with potential for localized flooding, basement flooding, and uprooted trees.

On Sunday, more thunderstorms are expected to move into the southeast and eastern regions of Germany, where locally strong thunderstorms could recur. The western and northern areas of the country are expected to see calmer weather.

According to the DWD, the unsettled weather pattern with showers and thunderstorms is expected to continue for the coming week, with a potential drop in temperatures. The upcoming weather conditions are part of a larger trend across central Europe, with widespread warmer conditions expected in the western-central and central-southern parts of the continent, though localized thunderstorms cannot be completely ruled out, especially in areas prone to convective activity such as southern or mountainous regions.

The Commission may consider the impact of environmental-science, including the understanding of ionizing radiation risks, on the draft directive for worker protection, given the potential risks posed by severe weather events such as thunderstorms.

These weather events, which are predicted to increase in frequency and intensity due to the science revealing climatic changes, could potentially expose workers in various industries to higher levels of ionizing radiation from soil erosion or increased airborne radioactive particles.
