Fort Worth officer ambushed and shot while protecting a civilian

Edward Zapata, a member of the Fort Worth Police Civilian Response Unit, was ambushed and shot last Tuesday while on duty. The attack occurred during a call, leaving him seriously wounded. His recovery remains uncertain, with doctors monitoring his condition daily. The ambush took place when Zapata was assisting a woman, prioritising her safety despite the sudden threat. Angel Cantu has been identified as the shooter in the incident.

Zapata, a 30-year veteran of the Marine Corps, previously sustained injuries while serving in Iraq. His military background and decades of service highlight his long-standing commitment to public safety.

Doctors have stated that his recovery is progressing slowly, but it is still unclear whether he will fully regain his sight. Despite the severity of his injuries, Zapata has expressed his intention to return to the Civilian Response Unit—provided his wife approves. Zapata’s future with the unit depends on his ongoing recovery and family support. The incident has left lasting physical challenges, particularly regarding his vision. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the ambush.
