Flood alert issued for Switzerland's Valais region by authorities: anticipated water levels may rise
In the aftermath of a catastrophic glacier collapse in Switzerland's Wallis region, authorities have sounded the alarm for potential flooding in the affected area. The incident occurred on Wednesday, burying around 90% of the village of Blatten and sending a massive amount of debris down the valley.
The collapse, involving approximately three million cubic meters of rock and ice, damaged the Lonza River, leading to its blockage. According to Christian Studer of the Canton Wallis' Natural Hazards Office, the artificially formed lake behind the fallen ice and rock masses is anticipated to overflow in the early morning hours of Friday.
Evacuations were carried out as a precautionary measure on Thursday. Seventeen residents from two villages downstream in the Lötschental valley—Wiler and Kippel—were evacuated, as well as two people from Blatten itself. The mayor of the municipality of Ferden, located in the Lötschental valley, reported that houses initially spared by the glacier collapse are now being destroyed by the backed-up water of the Lonza.
A 64-year-old man is still missing following the disaster, according to authorities. Search efforts have been halted due to the danger posed by falling debris and unstable ground in the affected area. Assessments will initially be conducted from a safe distance, primarily from the nearby village of Ferden.
The region remains on high alert, with authorities monitoring the situation closely for potential flooding. The risk of an ice jam is considered serious, and should water levels rise considerably or the debris dam fail, there is a heightened risk of sudden flash flooding downstream. Evacuations may be carried out again if necessary, depending on the evolving situation and the results of ongoing remote assessments.
