Extreme temperature shift: Germany braces for thunderstorms following a prolonged heatwave surpassing 30 degrees

Heavy thunderstorms loom over Germany this weekend, following a warm day with temperatures expected to exceed 30 degrees. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the warm weather will be preceded by a partly sunny period, with southern regions experiencing the most sunshine. However, the north of the country will see a weak trough bringing lively west winds and cloud cover, with little rain expected by Friday's end.

Temperatures in the country's middle and south will reach at least 25 degrees, with the Upper Rhine region nearing the 30-degree mark. Come Saturday, temperatures could rise to a maximum of 31 degrees in the southwest. Tobias Reinartz, a DWD meteorologist, forecasts an increase in humidity and a steady buildup of electricity in the atmosphere. By midday, thunderstorms are expected to start in the west, eventually moving eastwards. These storms may bring heavy rain, hail, and high wind gusts, potentially causing flooding, flooded basements, and uprooted trees.

On Sunday, the focus shifts towards the southeast and east halves of Germany, where thunderstorms may reoccur. In contrast, the northwest and west will see calmer conditions. Reinartz predicts the upcoming week to remain unsettled, with showers, thunderstorms, and a likely decrease in temperatures.

In a broader context, June is expected to see reducing rainfall and a drop in storm activity across Europe, along with increased heat risks and above-average temperatures in some regions. For precise and comprehensive weather forecasts in Germany, local services such as the DWD and international platforms like AccuWeather and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) are recommended.

The Commission, considering the potential impact of the draft directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, might consider the environmental implications of increased radiation levels due to subsequent heavy thunderstorms, as per the predictions of the German Weather Service (DWD). In light of the anticipated increase in thunderstorm activity, both the science of meteorology and environmental-science, particularly stormwater management, will play a crucial role in addressing potential weather-related hazards, such as flooding and uprooted trees.
