Ex-Padres prospect Humberto Cruz self-deports after human smuggling conviction

Humberto Cruz, once a top prospect for the San Diego Padres, has self-deported to Mexico after a human smuggling conviction. The 21-year-old pitcher, who signed with the team for a $750,000 bonus, pleaded guilty to transporting two undocumented migrants in exchange for payment. His departure follows a 30-day jail sentence and the near-certainty of removal from the U.S. Cruz was arrested by Border Patrol agents while driving a BMW SUV with Mexican licence plates. Inside the vehicle, officers discovered two Mexican citizens who had entered the country illegally. During questioning, he admitted to being paid $1,000 per person to transport them across state lines.

Originally facing a felony charge, Cruz later pleaded guilty to a lesser misdemeanor offence under federal law. In court, he expressed 'sincere regret' for his involvement in the smuggling operation. He also issued a public apology to his teammates, the Padres organisation, and fans. The Padres confirmed that Cruz remains on the minor-league restricted list. His future with the team is now uncertain following his conviction and departure from the U.S.

Cruz’s case marks a sharp fall from his early promise as a marquee international signing. The 30-day jail term and self-deportation cut short his baseball career in America. For now, he remains officially listed as restricted by the Padres, with no immediate indication of a return.
